What is Resource?

Resource rooms are classrooms where special education is delivered to children with a disability. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day. Individual needs are supported in resource rooms as defined by the student's IEP. Sometimes this form of support is called Resource and Withdrawal (or pull out). The child getting this type of support will receive some time in the resource room which refers to the withdrawal portion of the day and some time in the regular classroom with modifications and or accommodations which is the resource support in the regular classroom. This kind of help you can find in public elementary schools along with middle and high schools. According to USAToday Nearly 7 million students with disabilities are served in U.S. public schools and that was posted in 2008.

The Disadvantages of Attending Resource

Just like everything there is always advantages and disadvantages. With attending resource there are reasons why you wouldn't want your child to attend resource. One of the disadvantages is that the student gets pulled out of their class and misses the concepts that are being taught in the classroom during the time that they are gone. There also has to be  severe learning gap in order for them to qualify for the help of resource. So those individuals who struggle in school just a little, have to learn how to work harder because they don't meet that gap. Sometimes even those students who don't the individualized help they need start to give up school and drop out. I was a student  who was one of those students who struggles in school. I love school but I struggle. I am not one who can just study the night before the test and pass the class. I have to really study in advanced  and put more time and effort in my classes and truly work harder than a typical student. I am not saying that I wish I went to resource but I will say that I have a soft spot in my  heart for those students who are bright but they struggle when it comes to test taking or doing math. I think that something should be done to help those students. Whether it be make the classroom smaller or have tutor in each classroom.

The Advantages of Resource

The past month or so I have had the opportunity to work with an individual and help them with their math. This individual is very bright but struggles when it comes to learning math. As I was working with them I found that they are in fifth grade but are on a second grade level of math. I also found out that this individual attends resource. Since working with them I have been curious if attending resource truly benefits the student. Since then after reading and doing some research and talking to teachers I have found that there are some major advantages for attending resource. One of them is that the student gets taught things at their level and that the teaching is more tailored to their needs. The class or group is smaller than a regular classroom and they receive individualized help. The most important advantage for me that I found was that they feel success when they are in resource. As I was helping this individual with math I could tell that they were embarrassed that they needed index cards to help them with their times tables during class. I also could tell by how they did math that they didn't feel to much of success in the classroom. There was one or two times where they did feel successful with math when I was there and according to the teacher that individual was happy and proud of themselves the rest of the day. I honestly believe that students everywhere need a moment of success because if they don't then they will be more than willing to give up on school and on learning and doing that subject. They also will be fearful and they won't have a lot of confidence in themselves.
